Senator Ali Ndume has delivered a sharp warning from within Nigeria’s governing party, accusing unqualified officials, whom he described as “kakistocrats,” of dominating President Bola Tinubu’s administration and undermining the government.
The Borno South senator’s criticism has struck a nerve because it comes not from the opposition, but from a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress.
What does “kakistocracy” mean?
A kakistocracy is government by the least qualified or least suitable people. By using the word, Ndume was making more than a complaint about individual mistakes. He was questioning the competence and influence of some people surrounding the President.
Ndume urged Tinubu to remove officials who, in his view, continue to damage the administration. His intervention followed controversy surrounding an alleged fake federal agency and the procedural failures that reportedly allowed unauthorised structures to interact with government institutions.
Fake-agency scandal renews questions about oversight
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has been investigating the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council. The commission said the body lacked a legal foundation and that its purported leadership had no valid federal appointment.
Although investigators said they found no evidence that federal funds were released to the body, the affair raised serious questions about access to offices, forged documents, verification procedures and possible assistance from public officials.
Ndume credited Tinubu for taking action in response to the matter, but argued that deeper consequences were required.
An insider’s criticism carries political weight
Presidents depend heavily on advisers because no leader personally verifies every appointment, memo or contract. When those gatekeepers are incompetent or self-interested, they can isolate the President from reality and weaken public trust.
That is why Ndume’s warning will resonate with Nigerians frustrated by policy reversals, unclear communication and repeated scandals. The public wants to know whether senior appointments are based on competence and integrity or political loyalty alone.
Tinubu faces a choice before 2027
As the 2027 election approaches, the administration’s record will be judged not only by presidential speeches, but by the quality of the people empowered to act in the President’s name.
Ndume’s language is provocative, but the underlying test is straightforward. Tinubu must show that incompetence has consequences, that internal controls work and that officials who misuse public authority will be investigated regardless of political connections.
If an APC senator believes the Presidency is being undermined from within, Nigerians deserve a clear response based on action rather than another exchange of accusations.
