New Diaspora Health Programme Seeks to Connect Nigerian Medical Expertise Worldwide

The Nigerians in Diaspora Advanced Health Programme aims to channel the expertise of Nigerian health professionals abroad into stronger local services.

Nigerian healthcare professionals supporting diaspora health collaboration

The Federal Government has launched the Nigerians in Diaspora Advanced Health Programme, known as NiDAH-P, together with a digital portal intended to connect Nigerian medical professionals abroad with the country’s health system.

The programme is designed to support knowledge exchange, specialist services, training and collaboration with local institutions. It comes as Nigeria continues to face health workforce shortages, uneven access to specialists and pressure from the migration of trained professionals.

A promising idea that needs clear delivery

Diaspora participation can support local care through telemedicine, visiting specialist programmes, continuing professional education, research partnerships and structured mentoring. These contributions are most useful when they complement, rather than replace, sustained investment in Nigeria’s resident health workforce.

For the programme to earn confidence, it will need transparent registration, verified professional credentials, clear clinical governance and measurable targets. Patient privacy, medical licensing, referral processes and continuity of care must also be built into any digital service.

Long-term success should be measured by improvements such as shorter specialist waiting times, more trained local personnel, stronger clinical partnerships and better access in underserved communities.
