Political tensions are rising in Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election, with the Accord Party and Governor Ademola Adeleke’s campaign alleging that dozens of party members and leaders have been detained.
The campaign has demanded the release of those affected and described the arrests as intimidation. Reports have carried different figures for the number detained, ranging from more than 60 to 86 people. Because the totals remain disputed, the central confirmed issue is the Accord campaign’s public allegation of widespread arrests before the election.
Claims require transparent investigation
Authorities have not provided a single publicly documented account resolving all the competing claims. That makes transparency essential. Security agencies should identify the legal basis for each arrest, provide access to legal representation and distinguish legitimate criminal investigations from political activity.
The allegation comes during an increasingly competitive campaign. Adeleke, the incumbent governor, is seeking re-election on the Accord Party platform. The election is expected to draw national attention because of Osun’s history of closely contested governorship races.
Focus turns to a credible election
For voters, the priority is a peaceful process in which all candidates can campaign lawfully and citizens can vote without intimidation. The Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties and civil society groups will all face scrutiny over their conduct before, during and after polling.
Political parties also have a responsibility to avoid inflammatory claims that cannot be supported by evidence. At the same time, credible allegations of selective arrests should be investigated promptly, with findings made public.
A transparent response would help reduce tension and protect confidence in the election. Diaspora observers and domestic monitors will be watching whether the campaign environment remains open and whether disputes are handled through lawful institutions.
